Woods turns in top-30 performance in 5K freestyle at Middlebury Carnival

RIPTON, Vt. -- Junior captain Kaelyn Woods finished 21st out of an expanded field of 179 women's Nordic skiers Saturday in the 5K freestyle race at the Middlebury Carnival, which doubled as the Frost Mountain Eastern Cup. 

Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) raced to the finish in 13:57.9 to pace the Bobcats. Woods combined with sophomore Zoe McKinney (North Conway, N.H.) and sophomore Maya Seckinger (Winthrop, Wash.) to score 52 carnival points, good for 8th out of 12 schools. McKinney finished 55th with a time of 14:47.6 and Seckinger came in 62nd with a time of 14:57.0.

On the men's side, sophomore Tucker Pierce (New Gloucester, Maine) led the way, taking 46th out of 65 collegiate skiers in the 10K freestyle race with a time of 24:46.9. Sophomore captain Carter Ros (Hailey, Idaho) and first-year Henry Raff (Hailey, Idaho) also earned carnival points for Bates, finishing 49th and 50th respectively. 

The Bobcats Nordic teams combined with the alpine teams to score 356 carnival points, good for 8th place out of 15 schools at the Middlebury Carnival.

Bates hosts the NCAA East Regional this Friday and Saturday at Black Mountain in Rumford.
