RUMFORD, Maine -- Junior Kaelyn Woods led the way again for the Bates Nordic ski teams Saturday at the Bates Carnival and NCAA East Regional Championships, placing 13th out of 62 competitors in the women's 15-kilometer classical technique race at Black Mountain.
Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) led the Bates women's team to eighth place in the event with her 30 team points scored. Sophomore Maya Seckinger (Winthrop, Wash.) placed 36th in 49:34.6 and sophomore Zoe McKinney (North Conway, N.H.) rounded out the team scoring in 41st place (50:58.1).
In the men's 20K classic, first-year Henry Raff (Hailey, Idaho) led the way for the Bobcats by taking 35th place among 65 competitors, with a time of 56:43.5. Sophomore Tucker Barber (Wilton, Maine) finished 43rd in 58:33.1 and sophomore Carter Ros (Hailey, Idaho) finished the team scoring in 47th (59:04.6).
Bates' Nordic and alpine teams combined for seventh place among 14 teams competing in the Bates Carnival, with 408 team points. Dartmouth edged Vermont 973-965 for first place.
It's the end of the EISA carnival season for the Bobcats, but Woods is expected to receive an invitation to compete in the NCAA National Collegiate Ski Championships for a second straight year. The NCAA Nordic races take place in Stowe, Vt., with the women's 5K freestyle race on March 6 and the women's 15K classical on March 8.
