Men's varsity eight places ninth out of 37 boats at Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates men's rowing team placed ninth among 37 boats and third among Division III teams Sunday in the Men's Collegiate Eights race at the 52nd Head of the Charles.

The Bates MV8, coxswained by senior Benjamin Whitehead (Shaker Heights, Ohio), finished the 4,800-meter serpentine course in 16:36.310, in between a pair of Philadelphia universities in eighth-place Drexel (16:28.090) and 10th-place St. Joseph's (16:37.892) -- up from Bates' 19th-place showing a year ago.

Rowing club Laga won the race in 15:55.389. Only fourth-place WPI (16:19.634) and sixth-place Hobart (16:26.974) outpaced Bates among nine Division III colleges in the race.

Bates also placed 18th out of 43 boats and fifth among Division III schools in Men's Collegiate Fours, coxed by sophomore Ariel Lee (Misawa-shi, Japan) in a time of 18:55.717.

Bates' abbreviated fall schedule concludes Saturday, Oct. 29 at the CBB Chase, hosted by Colby.
