BOSTON, Mass. -- The No. 2 nationally ranked Bates women's rowing team took on Simmons and the Harvard-Radcliffe lightweights this Sunday on the Charles River, showing off their depth and defeating Simmons in every race along the way.

Facing a slight headwind that increased throughout the morning, the women's varsity eight raced to the finish in their 2-kilometer race with Harvard-Radcliffe and Simmons in 7:22.1. Their time was eight seconds behind Harvard-Radcliffe and more than 38 seconds faster than Simmons.

The second varsity eight also found themselves about eight seconds behind Harvard-Radcliffe in their 2K race, finishing in 7:36.0, well ahead of Simmons (8:21.5) and not that far away from Harvard Radcliffe (7:28.5).

But the highlight of the day for the Bobcats belonged to the third varsity eight, led by coxswain Hanna De Bruyn '18 (Old Lyme, Conn.) and first-year stroke Elizabeth Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.), they won their race with a time of 7:53.3, which would have been good enough to beat the Simmons first varsity eight. They defeated the second place Harvard-Radcliffe third varsity eight by eight seconds.

The women's rowing team heads to the WPI Invitational on April 9.
