MEDFORD, Mass. -- The men's rowing team impressed again on Saturday with two grand final victories and one petite final win over NESCAC opponents Wesleyan and host Tufts at the Tufts University Crew Races on the Malden River.

The first varsity eight crews for Bates and Tufts squared off in the first 2-kilometer race of the day.

Led by senior captain Benjamin Whitehead (Shaker Heights, Ohio) at coxswain and junior Quinn Gardner (Tucson, Ariz.) at stroke, the Bobcat first varsity eight outraced the Jumbos by 10 seconds, finishing with a time of 5:52 to advance to the grand final.

The second varsity eight also outraced the Jumbos. Led by sophomore coxswain Ariel Lee (Misawa-shi, Aomori, Japan) and sophomore stroke Kento Kajima (New York, N.Y.), Bates clocked in at 5:59, a time that would have been good enough to also beat the Tufts' first varsity eight. It clipped the Jumbos' second varsity eight crew by four seconds.

In the first varsity eight grand final, Bates defeated Wesleyan by nine seconds with a time of 5:50, tied for the fastest time among all the schools in any race on the day.

Impressively, that tie took place between the Bobcat first varsity eight and the second varsity eight. The second varsity eight also won their grand final with a time of 5:50. They beat Wesleyan's second varsity eight crew by six seconds.

Although the third varsity eight dropped their first race of the day to Tufts, they bounced back with a slightly different lineup to defeat Wesleyan in the petite final. Bates won by a 15-second margin, racing to the finish in 6:08.

The men's rowing team is back on the water on April 22 when they visit MIT to race the Engineers.
