GREENE, Maine -- The Bates men's rowing team took first place out of three boats in all five races Sunday in the Bates Invitational, rowing against Middlebury College and the University of New Hampshire.
Bates' varsity eight (MV8) finished the Bobcats' 2,000-meter home course on the Androscoggin River in 6:29.8, 6.7 seconds ahead of runner-up Middlebury (6:36.5) and 29 seconds ahead of UNH. The race represented Bates' closest margin of victory on the day.
Bates' M2V8 went 6:34.6 to defeat Middlebury (6:51.9) and UNH (7:12.9), and the Bobcat M3V8 took a 6:46.5 to 7:04.3 win over UNH, with Middlebury a distant third (7:26.7).
Bates was also the winner ahead of runner-up UNH in both fours races. The Bates MV4's winning time was 7:50.3 ahead of UNH (8:17.5) and Middlebury (8:44.1), while in the novice fours the Bobcats (8:19.2) outraced UNH (8:31.4) and Middlebury (9:10.0).
Bates competes in the New England Rowing Championships on Saturday, May 6 in Worcester, Massachusetts.
