Men's rowing wins M2V8 grand final, is runner-up in MV8s at New England Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bates men's rowing team placed second in the men's varsity eight grand final and first in the second varsity eight grand final, in one of the program's best-ever performances at the New England Rowing Championships Saturday on Quinsigamond Lake.

Bates' M2V8, ranked first in a field of 15 boats, won its heat against Coast Guard (7:02.993), Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Boston College with a time of 6:58.984 over 2,000 meters, advancing to the grand final. There the Bobcats again defeated runner-up Coast Guard, 6:46.619 to 6:49.195, followed by Wesleyan, Tufts, Williams and Colby in the race.

Bates' MV8, also ranked first in a field of 17 boats, rowed its the second of three trial races in 6:39.498, outpacing Wesleyan (6:45.142), UMass, Coast Guard, UNH and Amherst. WPI took first place in the grand final with a time of 6:23.784, edging Bates (6:27.578) and Rhode Island (6:29.392).

Bates will return to Worcester next weekend for the National Invitational Rowing Championships. At that all-important regatta, the top NESCAC MV8 will win the NESCAC Championship and the top Division III MV8 will qualify for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship.
