Second varsity eight advances to third level final at IRA National Championship Regatta

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Bates men's rowing team's second varsity eight finished third in its semifinal on Saturday, outracing Saint Joseph's (Pa.) and Florida Tech to earn a spot in the third level final at the IRA National Championship Regatta.

The Bobcats nearly outraced George Washington as well, finishing in 6:07.642. The Colonials took second with a time of 6:07.398 and Pennsylvania finished first in 6:04.863. Meanwhile Saint Joseph's (6:10.468) and Florida Tech (6:13.648) came in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Bates will take on Navy, Pennsylvania, George Washington, Stanford and Temple Sunday in the third level final, which gets underway at 8:40 a.m.

Meanwhile the first varsity eight outraced UC San Diego by open water to finish fifth in its semifinal on Saturday. The Bobcats finished in 6:00.322 and UC San Diego came in well behind with a time of 6:14.547. Bates nearly took fourth place but Oregon State held off the Bobcats by less than a second. Cornell won the race in 5:52.499.

The first varsity eight wraps up the IRA National Championship Regatta Sunday in the fourth level final when the Bobcats compete against Temple, Oregon State, Marist, UC San Diego and University of San Diego at 8:54 a.m.
