MALDEN, Mass. -- The No. 1 nationally ranked Bates women's rowing team was a collective 7-0 in seven head-to-head races on the Malden River Saturday morning, outracing boats from No. 7 Wesleyan, No. 6 Wellesley and the host and 12th-ranked Jumbos from Tufts University. Meanwhile the Bates men's team was 3-3 in six head-to-head races against Tufts and UMass-Amherst.
In a tournament-style format, Bates' women's first, second and third varsity eights all outpaced Tufts in the first round of races to advance to their respective finals, all of which they won. Bates also raced a varsity four against Wellesley, winning 8:07.6 to 8:28.5.
Bates' WV8 beat Tufts 6:46.5 to 6:58.7, followed by a 6:43.6 to 6:52.9 victory over Wesleyan. The W2V8 defeated in an impressive effort by both boats, 6:48-6:52.8. Bates won the W2V8 championship over Wesleyan 7:02.0 to 7:16.04. Bates' dominating W3V8 followed a 7:12.4-7:37.5 victory over Tufts with a 6:55.0-7:11.1 pasting of Wellesley in the W3V8 championship.
The Bates men's team fielded three eights, each of which followed losses to Tufts with consolation victories over UMass. The Bates MV8 outraced UMass 5:59-1-6:03.8 after losing narrowly to Tufts in the first round, 5:54.5-5:58.8. Bates' M2V8 also lost narrowly to Tufts, 6:16.1-6:19.8, then defeated UMass by eight seconds (6:20.3-6:28.3). The Bates M3V8 defeated UMass 6:27.22-6:42.0 after a 6:15.1-6:27.0 loss to Tufts.
The top-ranked Bobcat women have a showdown ahead on Sunday in Worcester, Mass., racing at host and second-ranked WPI on Lake Quinsigamond along with Wellesley, No. 11 RIT and No. 13 Trinity. The Engineers were the national runner-up to NCAA champion Bates at the 2018 Division III Championships.
