CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates softball team scored 11 runs between the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game, but Carthage retook the lead in the eighth to win 14-13 on Saturday. That game paired with a 6-3 loss earlier in the day against North Central dropped Bates to 0-8 over four days.
The Bobcats will conclude their season-opening trip to Florida with a 9am game against Worcester State, followed by Union College at 11am.
RECAP: Carthage 14, Bates 13 (8 innings)
Bates' bats rang out with a season-high 16 hits, highlighted by sophomore Emma Schiller's (Natick, Mass.) first career home run, a grand slam in the fourth inning. Schiller was 3-for-6 with three runs. Senior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) also had three hits, including two doubles with three RBIs.
Carthage seized an 8-2 lead with five runs in the third and three runs in the fourth. But in the bottom of the fourth, Bates loaded the bases with one out on singles by sophomore Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.), sophomore Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) and first-year Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.), and Schiller's slam brought them all home. Junior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) later drew a two-out walk and scored on sophomore Maria Garbarino's (Andover, Mass.) single, bringing Bates within a run after four.
Carthage tacked on three more runs in the fifth, however, using two hits, an error and a wild pitch to gain a 13-7 lead.
But Bates tied the game at 13 with a two-out, six-run rally in the fifth. Sophomore Tori Fitzgerald started it off with a walk, followed by a Schiller single. Lockhart doubled them both home, and scored on first-year Madison Fox's (Denver, Colo.) single to right. Garbarino and Ahlholm then hit back-to-back doubles for three more runs to tie the game.
The score remained there after scoreless sixth and seventh innings. Carthage's Darian Pelsor was placed on second to start the eighth, and she immediately scored on Abby Thompson's single to right. Bates first-year pitcher Kylie Martin (Auburn, Maine) worked out of the rest of the inning unscathed. In the bottom of the inning, Bates had runners on first and third when the game ended on Schiller's liner to short.
Eight Bobcats had hits in the game, six of them with more than one. Fox, Garbarino, Ahlholm and Fitzgerald had two hits apiece each.
Crowley allowed 13 runs (11 earned) on 12 hits and six walks in five innings to take the loss. Martin limited Carthage to one run on one hit and one walk in three innings.
RECAP: North Central 6, Bates 3
Bates struck first with three runs in the top of the third, but North Central responded with four in the bottom of the inning and added to the lead with single runs in the fourth and the sixth.
Russo, who was 3-for-4 in the game, doubled in the third and came home along with senior Marina Barsoum (Newark, N.J.) after a Schiller single and a passed ball. Schiller also scored on a sacrifice fly by Lockhart.
North Central took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, using five hits to score four runs, including RBI doubles by Rachele Belletini and Jenna Trojniar.
Martin allowed six runs on 14 hits to accept the loss. North Central's Sarah Esposito went the distance, giving up six hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
