LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates softball team played rival Bowdoin toe-to-toe in a home-opening doubleheader on Saturday, but the Bobcats' first win remained elusive after losses of 6-3 in Game 1 and 11-6 in Game 2.

Bowdoin sweeps the teams' three-game series and rises to 12-7-1 overall, 3-1 in NESCAC East Division play. Bates drops to 0-16 overall and 0-4 in the NESCAC East.

Bates travels to Trinity on Sunday to finish another three-game NESCAC East series that began last weekend. The teams will resume their suspended game from April 2 at 1pm, with Trinity leading 13-3 in the top of the fifth. At 2pm the teams will play the third and final game of the series.

Game 1 Recap

Bowdoin took a 4-0 lead before Bates scored three runs in the bottom of the third to close it to 4-3. The Polar Bears added runs in the fifth and seventh innings to ice the victory.

Emma Stevens hit a three-run home run to put Bowdoin ahead 4-0 in the top of the third off of Bates first-year starter Kylie Martin (Poland, Maine).

Bates countered in the bottom of the frame, with sophomore Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.) doubling home first-year Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Maria Garbarino (Reading, Mass.). Schiller later scored on a passed ball.

Bowdoin added to its lead in the fifth, with Marisa O'Toole hitting a one-out double and later scoring on Samantha Valdivia's fielder's choice.

In the seventh, Bates first-year pitcher Sam Fellers (Mendham, N.J.) made her first appearance since the team's season-opening trip to Florida, returning to action from an injury. But Bowdoin made it 6-3 as Claire McCarthy drew a leadoff walk and scored on Julia Geaumont's single.

Bowdoin out-hit Bates 12-5 in the game, with Geaumont going 3-for-3. Samantha Roy (1-2) earned the win and Geaumont pitched the last two innings for her first save.

Game 2 Recap

Bates spotted Bowdoin a run in the top of the first but took a 5-1 lead after one inning. Russo was hit by a pitch to lead off, and the Bobcats loaded the bases with singles by Schiller and senior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.). Junior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) delivered a two-run double and first-year Madison Fox (Denver, Colo.) followed with an RBI single. Sophomore Tori Fitzgerald hit a one-out single to score Inlow, and Fox scored on a passed ball to make it 5-1.

Bowdoin gobbled up three runs from Bates' lead in the second, however, loading the bases with no outs off of Bates first-year starter Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.). Crowley walked Lauren O'Shea, and Jordan Gowdy followed with a two-run single to score Nicole Nelson and O'Toole.

Lockhart drove a Geaumont offering over the center-field fence to make it 6-4 in the second inning, her second homer of the season.

Facing Fellers (0-4), who had come on for Crowley in the second, Bowdoin mounted a two-run rally with two outs and no one on base in the fourth to tie the game at 6-6. Rice began the rally with a double to right center, and Geaumont walked. Three wild pitches and a walk issued to McCarthy closed the gap to 6-5, and the Polar Bears tied it as Gately singled to score Geaumont.

Bowdoin led off the sixth with a double by Rice and a Geamont single, and they seized an 8-6 lead on McCarthy's triple to right field. Gately then plated McCarthy with a single to make it 9-6.

Bowdoin had 15 hits in the game to Bates' 13 -- Bates' most hits since March 20. Inlow led the offense with a 3-for-4 game, including two RBIs. For Bowdoin, Gately was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Geaumont raised her record to 8-2, going the full seven inning sand allowing six runs (five earned) on 13 hits.
