WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates softball team fell by scores of 9-1 and 9-4 to Brandeis in a Sunday doubleheader. Sophomore Tori Fitzgerald and junior Jenney Abbott both recorded a pair of runs batted in on the day.

Game One: Brandeis 9, Bates 1 (5 innings)

The Judges scored four in the first and two in the second to take command in game one of Sunday's a doubleheader on their way to a 9-1 win over the Bobcats.

Sophomore Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.) singled with one out in the first and senior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) reached safely as well. But Bates left both runners stranded.

In the bottom of the first, Keri Lehtonen singled to start the frame. Amanda Shore drew a walk and the Judged bunted the runners over. Madison Gagnon walked as well to load the bases. Madison Sullivan followed with a grand slam to put the Judges up 4-0.

Sophomore Maria Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) doubled with one out in the top of the second. With two away, senior Marina Barsoum (Newark, N.J.) drew a walk. But both runners got left stranded when Brandeis starter Melissa Soleimani (7-9) struck out the next hitter to end the inning.

Liana Moss led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run. Lehtonen singled and Shore drew another walk. Another walk loaded the bases and with two away Jordan Buscetto doubled home two runs to extend the Brandeis lead to 7-0.

Bates got on the board in the top of the third. Schiller singled to begin the inning. Lockhart and junior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) singled as well to load the bases. Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) singled in Schiller to cut the deficit to 7-1. But a double play and a ground-out ended the inning, denying Bates any more runs.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth when Brandeis plated two more runs to end the game.

Schiller and Fitzgerald both went 2-3 at the plate in game one with Schiller scoring the lone run for Bates and Fitzgerald recording the lone RBI.

Game Two: Brandeis 9, Bates 4

The Bobcats (3-28) scored four runs in the first inning to take an early lead but the Judges (15-16) responded with five runs in the second and four more in the sixth to prevail 9-4 in game two of Sunday's twin bill.

With one away in the top of the first, Inlow singled and Lockhart doubled. Fitzgerald singled home Inlow and sophomore Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) singled in Lockhart to put Bates up 2-0. With two away, junior Abby Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) singled to load the bases. Her twin sister Jenney Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) singled in two runs to extend the lead to 4-0.

That marked the end of the day for Brandeis starter Sadie-Rose Apfel. But reliever Sarah Petrides (4-2) shut down the Bates offense after that, going six and a third innings of shutout ball, allowing only four hits and tallying a pair of strike outs along the way.

After the Judges went down in order in the bottom of the first, they scored five in the second to take the lead for good. Gagnon got hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Sullivan followed with a single and one out later Madison Hunter doubled in both runners. After Marissa DeLaurentis singled, Moss launched a three-run homer to put the Judges up 5-4.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth when Brandeis launched back-to-back-to-back home runs to put the finishing touches on their 9-4 win.

Moss finished the doubleheader with three homers for the Judges. Brandeis hit a total of six homers over the course of the twin bill.

Bates is back in action Monday when they host Maine-Farmington in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
