BANGOR, Maine -- Sophomore Paige Ahlholm tallied two hits, including a double, and drove in a run but the Bates softball team fell 8-2 to Husson Wednesday afternoon.
Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) went 2-3 at the plate to pace the Bates (5-29) offense.
Husson (12-23) got on the board in the bottom of the first.
Lyndsay Merrill and Allison Hill reached on back-to-back singles to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved each runner up 90 feet and Casey Lopes singled home the first run of the game.
Bates tied things up in the top of the second. First-year Madison Fox (Denver, Colo.) reached second base on a Husson error. Sophomore Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) bunted Fox to third and Ahlholm singled her home to even the game at one.
But the Eagles took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Kristen Chipman reached on a lead-off base-on-balls. The Eagles bunted her to second and with two away Merrill doubled Chipman in to put Husson up 2-1. Hill doubled home Merrill to extend the lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the third, a Bates error allowed a run to score and in the fourth Lopes delivered a two-RBI single to make the score 6-1. A third run scored later in the inning thanks to a double steal.
Down 7-1, Bates got a run back in the top of the fifth. Ahlholm doubled to begin the inning. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Maria Garbarino '18 (Reading, Mass.) single.
But that's as close as Bates would get as Husson responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) went 1-3 on the day to move into a tie for second place on the Bates all-time career hits list.
