Bates 4, John Carroll 1
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Bates softball collected 13 hits in support of a strong start from junior pitcher Kirsten Pelletier, en route to defeating John Carroll University 4-1 on Tuesday, earning the Bobcats' first win of the young season.
Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) scattered six hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out eight batters to pick up the complete-game victory.
First-year Kennedy Ishii (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored the game's first run in the second inning after drawing a one-out walk. Sophomore Mary Collette (Watertown, Conn.) and first-year Eliza McNulty (Cambridge, Mass.) loaded the bases with consecutive singles, and Ishii came home on a sacrifice fly to right by E Samar.
The Bobcats (1-5) loaded the bases to start the third inning and bring up Ishii again. First-year Janell Sato (Honolulu, Hawaii) was hit by a pitch, and junior Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) and first-year Aleah Pagan (Orinda, Calif.) followed with singles. Ishii's single drove in Sato and Panepinto. Pagan was caught in a rundown, but the Bobcats added another score on McNulty's two-out single, giving the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
John Carroll (3-2) loaded the bases in the fifth inning and Elizabeth Fraas singled up the middle to score pinch runner Sydney Hall to close the gap to 4-1 for the Blue Streaks, but Pelletier struck out Quinn Sobieszczanski to end the rally.
Sophomore Caroline Bass (Newton, Mass.) batted 3-for-4 in the game, including a double, while Sato and McNulty were both 2-for-3. Ishii scored twice and drove in two runs. Nine players on the Bobcats had hits.
The Bobcats take a day off from games on Wednesday before they finish their Florida trip with two games apiece on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Thursday they will face Alverno and Bridgewater (Va.) at Osceola Softball Complex Field 3 in Kissimmee.
Trine 14, Bates 2 (5 innings)
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- On Tuesday morning, Bates fell 14-2 to Trine University in five innings.
After falloing behind 3-0, the Bobcats tallied two runs in the second. Collette singled with one out and then with two away first-year Emily Samar (New York, N.Y.) singled and advanced to second on an error. Bass delivered a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.
But Trine answered with five in the second and six in the third to pull away from Bates. Sophomore Jevan Sandhu (Plymouth, N.H.) pitched well out of the bullpen for Bates, tossing an inningn and two thirds of shutout ball and striking out three along the way.
Hannah Kampmann pitched three and a third innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen for Trine to pick up the win. Trine out-hit the Bobcats by a count of 11-7.
