LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Kirsten Pelletier pitched back-to-back shutouts, a one-hitter and a two-hitter, as the Bates softball completed a three-game series sweep of Colby with 4-0 and 6-0 victories in their home-opening doubleheader on Saturday.

Bates improves to 8-13 this season and earned its third win in the NESCAC East (3-3). Colby falls to 2-13 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) pitched all 14 innings this afternoon for Bates and registered 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits. Junior Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a double in game one and a home run in game 2.

Game 1 proved scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when first-year Kennedy Ishii's (Honolulu, Hawaii) sacrifice bunt knocked in senior Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.). Sophomore Caroline Bass (Newton, Mass.) followed with a double down the left field line that brought in first-year Emily Samar (New York, N.Y.) to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Panepinto scored on a passed ball, and a Samar single up the middle scored sophomore Mary Collette (Watertown, Conn.) for the final.

The Bobcats finished with nine hits. Panepinto and Bass each recorded a double. Collette, Russo and Samar went 2 for 3. Colby's lone hit of the game came on a single up the middle by Paige Bober in the top of the seventh. Pelletier earned the win and logged five strikeouts.

In game 2, Bates started the scoring early, notching two runs in the first and then added a run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the first, a double by Collette knocked in Pagan and Bass. Collette tallied her third RBI of the game on a single to center field, where Panepinto scored. In the fourth, Ishii was able to score on a wild pitch, and in the fifth, Panepinto logged her fourth homerun of the season. Sophomore Aleah Pagan (Orinda, Calif.) was walked with the bases loaded in the sixth to send in the final run of the game.

Bates recorded eight hits, while the Mules finished with just two. Ishii went 2 for 2. Pelletier registered her seventh win this season and tallied six strikeouts.

The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday, April 14, when they play a doubleheader at Williams. Game times are set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
