INDIANAPOLIS -- Bates took 10th place Friday in the women's 800 freestyle relay race at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, breaking the team record and becoming the first All-America relay team in program history.
First-year Julia Smachlo (Rexford, N.Y.), sophomore Caroline Depew (Hudson, Ohio), sophomore Lindsey Prelgovisk (Oakland, Maine) and first-year Sara Daher (Marblehead, Mass.), seeded 11th in the event, finished the race in 7:32.20, 0.28 seconds behind ninth-place MIT and 1.09 seconds ahead of 11th-place Springfield. The quartet set the former team record of 7:34.62 at the NESCAC Championships on Feb. 15.
Ninth through 16th places are given Honorable Mention All-America honors -- it's the third in as many days for Daher at the meet, the second for Smachlo and the first for Depew and Prelgovisk.
Through three days, the Bates women's team is tied with Middlebury for 16th place among 47 teams that have scored points for top-16 performances at the meet, which is held at the IU Natatorium and hosted by Franklin College and Indiana Sports Corp.
The fourth and final day of competition is scheduled to begin Saturday morning with preliminaries at 10:00 a.m., while the finals are slated for 6:00 p.m.
