Women's basketball tops Regis at Babson tourney, 64-55

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Jessie Igoe scored a game-high 20 points and Annie Burns tied a career high with 13 assists as the Bates College women's basketball team defeated Regis College 64-55 Sunday in the consolation game of the Babson Invitational Tournament.

Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) set career highs in field goals attempted (16) and made (9) to score 20 points for the second time in her career. She added seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals, and was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.), sophomore Taryn O'Connell (Georgetown, Mass.) and junior Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland, Maine) scored nine, eight and eight points, respectively. Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) also made five steals for the Bobcats.

Bates (1-1) held Regis (2-2) to 28.8 percent shooting from the field, including 1-14 from behind the arc. The Pride also committed 24 turnovers.

Sarah McNult grabbed 16 rebounds to go with nine points and five steals for the Pride. Stephanie Crawford scored a team-high 14 points, on the strength of an 8-10 performance at the free-throw line.

Regis took its only lead of the game with 8:35 left in the first half, as Stefanie Wozmak hit a jumper to give the Pride a 19-18 advantage. But Bates responded with an 8-0 run, including back-to-back three-pointers by Beaulieu, to grab a 26-19 advantage. The Bobcats would never trail again in the period, taking a 33-27 advantage into the break.

Bates increased its lead to as many as 11 early in the second half before Regis eventually cut its deficit to just four, 46-42, after a pair of Crawford free throws with eight minutes remaining. However, the Bobcats embarked on a 10-2 run over the next three and a half minutes to push its lead back to double-digits, 56-44, with 4:32 on the play. The Pride would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as Bates held on for the 64-55 victory.

Bates hosts the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Bobcats' home opener. The game will be followed by the Bates-USM men's game at 7:30.
