LEWISTON, Maine -- Shannon Brady scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action to lead No. 21 nationally ranked Bowdoin to a 77-65 victory over the Bates women's basketball team Friday night in Alumni Gymnasium.

Bowdoin (20-3, 7-2 NESCAC) also received 13 points and eight rebounds from Sara Binkhorst, and Selena Lorrey came off the bench to make 4-of-4 shots, including three 3-pointers, for 12 points. The Polar Bears shot 50.9 percent from the field (29-57) and 46.2% from behind the arc (6-13).

Bates (7-16, 0-9 NESCAC) received 20 points and three steals from senior Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.), and first-year Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) added a season-high 19 points to go with eight rebounds. Bates was outrebounded 43-26.

Tomorrow at 2pm, Bates hosts Colby and Bowdoin in the final day of the season for both teams. Kelly has already clinched the team record for per-game scoring average in a season, as the lowest she could finish with now is 20.6. The former record of 20.0 points per game was set by Julie Roche in 1989-90. Last week at Hamilton, Kelly broke Olivia Zurek's single-season points record, which now stands at 494.

Coppola assisted on Bates' first two hoops of the game, setting Bates' aggressive tone by hitting the floor for a loose ball, then passing from the floor to Kelly for an open jumper and a 5-4 Bates lead.

Brady gave Bowdoin the lead back with consecutive layups, followed by a pair of Binkhorst free throws and a 3-pointer by Prue, which put the Polar Bears ahead 13-5.

Bates inched back in, however, closing the gap to 17-15 on a three by sophomore Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) and regaining the lead at 18-17 on Kelly's swished three with 11:06 left in the period. Both sides traded hoops over the next eight minutes, and Bates led 27-26 before Bowdoin's Kirsten Prue and Lorrey made back-to-back threes to open at 32-27 lead with 2:45 to go. Bowdoin closed out the period with a layup by Anna Prohl and a free throw by Marle Curle, for a 35-27 halftime advantage.

Kelly made 5-of-6 shots in the half for 13 points.

In the second half, Bowdoin staved off Bates' attempts to get back into the game. Lorrey made consecutive threes at 15:11 and 14:16 to keep a 10-point advantage. Megan Phelps added three points and Brady made a layup for a 56-41 Bowdoin lead, and the Polar Bears continued to pull away, extending the gap to as many as 22 points (72-50).

Bates sophomore Kate Moody (Charlottesville, Va.) came off the bench to score six consecutive points, including a 3-pointer, and Kelly capped an 8-0 run with a layup assisted by Coppola, compelling Bowdoin coach Adrienne Shibles to call timeout with a 72-58 lead with 2:24 left. Brady then put the game away for good with a pair of free throws and a layup, for a 76-58 lead with 1:32 to go.
