LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates first-year student Nina Davenport wasn't even a member of the Bates women's basketball team at the start of the 2014-15 season, but by the end she emerged as the clear top rookie player of any Division III player in Maine.

On Wednesday, the 5-foot-11 forward from Freeport, Maine, was named Maine Rookie of the Year by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Davenport was not a part of Bates' first nine games this season. She joined the team at the conclusion of the fall semester in December, after transferring to Bates from the University of Maine, and made an immediate impression by scoring 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting in her Bobcat debut, an 84-71 loss to MIT.

After the Bobcats lost the on-court services of their top scorer, senior Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.), to a season-ending injury, Davenport's prominence on the team soon expanded. She scored 15 points against NESCAC champion Tufts on Jan. 24 and was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in Bates' next game, Jan. 30 at Wesleyan. In her first start, Davenport exploded for 29 points.

Over Bates' final seven games -- Davenport's seven starts, six of them against NESCAC opponents -- the rookie averaged 23.1 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She is the NESCAC's second-leading scorer in conference games, at 17.1 points per game -- just 0.4 behind conference leader Mackenzie Griffin of Trinity.
