BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sam MacDonald scored a game-high 25 points on 10-13 shooting to lead the University of New England Nor'easters to a 76-56 win over the Bates women's basketball team Monday night.
The Bobcats (1-4) got a team-high 20 points from senior Nina Davenport (Freeport, Maine) and a career-high 11 points from first-year Julia Middlebrook (Ridgefield, Conn.) in the loss. Davenport is now three points shy of 1,000 for her career.
UNE (4-1) controlled the boards, out-rebounding Bates 50-33. Jocelyn Chaput tallied a double-double for the Nor'easters, pouring in 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
MacDonald opened the scoring with a three-pointer and UNE never trailed in the contest. Davenport responded with a jumper but the Nor'easters went on a 16-1 run to take a 19-3 lead with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Emily Freedland (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped the run with a three-pointer but Bates trailed 28-12 at the end of one quarter.
The Bobcats cut the deficit to nine with 7:20 left in the second quarter thanks to threes from Davenport and Freedland. Davenport finished the game with seven rebounds, an assist and two steals to go along with her 20 points. Freedland finished the contest with nine points. The teams traded buckets after that and Davenport trimmed the score to 38-31 on a pair of free throws with 2:55 remaining in the half. The Nor'easters responded with a 5-0 run to take a 43-31 lead into halftime.
Bates gained two more points on the Nor'easters in the third quarter, outscoring UNE 19-17 to make the score 60-50 entering the fourth quarter on a layup from senior captain Lexie Nason (Boxford, Mass.).
But UNE opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run to put the game away. Elyssa Nicholas made a three with 5:22 remaining in the game to extend the Nor'easter lead to 70-50. The teams played evenly after that, with Middlebrook hitting a jumper to stop the run.
Bates shot 19-55 (34.5%) from the field and the Nor'easters shot 24-70 (34.3%) on the evening.
The Bobcats play their home opener this Friday when they host Maine-Augusta at 7pm.
