WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Williams College Ephs made 12 of 13 shots in the third quarter to pull away from the Bates women's basketball team on Saturday, defeating the Bobcats by a final score of 77-42.
Williams (8-7, 2-2 NESCAC) outscored Bates (5-7, 1-3 NESCAC) by a count of 35-6 in the third quarter. This came after the Bobcats kept it close in the first half.
The Bobcats fell behind 19-12 but with 4:42 left in the second quarter junior Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) got a rally going by drilling a three. First-year Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) followed with a layup and first-year Grace Hoehl (South Burlington, Vt.) tied the game at 19 on a jumper with 3:00 remaining in the half.
Maggie Meehan answered with a jumper to put the Ephs ahead for good with 1:39 left in the second quarter. Lauren Vostal followed with a layup to put Williams up 23-19. After first-year Ariana Dalia (Brick, N.J.) split a pair of free throws, first-year Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) made a layup with 41 seconds left to get Bates to within one.
But after a Bates turnover, Emily Chang hit a three to give Williams a 26-22 halftime lead.
Williams scored the first 14 points of the third quarter to pull away from the Bobcats.
Meehan scored a game-high 22 points to pace the Ephs. Vostal added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Binkhorst paced Bates with 14 points on 6-12 shooting. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds and recorded a steal. Graff tallied six points, four rebounds, a team-high three assists and one steal. Dalia and Hoehl scored five points apiece.
The Ephs shot 51.6% from the field on the day and held Bates to 30.4% shooting.
The Bobcats return to action this Tuesday when they host Norwich at 5:30pm.
