Women's soccer wins 1-0 at Maine Maritime as Armah scores in collegiate debut

CASTINE, Maine -- First-year forward Adelaide Armah scored the game's lone goal and first-year head coach Joe Vari won his Bates debut as the Bobcats won 1-0 at Maine Maritime Academy in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday evening.

Bates' win marked the sixth straight season the Bobcats have defeated the Mariners, and the fourth straight year they did so in their season opener.

Armah (Accra, Ghana) converted an assist from Bates junior So Kim (Thornhill, Ontario) in the game's 20th minute. The tally came on the game's first shot attempt on either side.

Bates (1-0) outshot Maine Maritime (0-2) by a 19-4 margin, including a 14-0 difference in the second half. The Bobcats also had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior goalie Katherine Nuckols (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded her second career shutout, turning away three Mariner shots on goal over the final 25 minutes of the first half.

Bates put eight shots on goal, including two apiece by Armah, sophomore Sophie Matt (New Albany, Ohio) and senior Sarah DiPillo (Medway, Mass.).

Emily Conway made six saves in 75 minutes of action for MMA. Bess McArthur made one save over the final 15 minutes.

Bates plays at Hamilton College Saturday at 11am to open its New England Small College Athletic Conference schedule.
