No. 24 women's squash splits a pair of tight 5-4 matches with No. 29 F&M and No. 12 Brown

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 24 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team won a 5-4 thriller over No. 29 Franklin & Marshall and battled No. 12 Brown down to the wire in a 5-4 loss Saturday at the Bates College Squash Center. 

Junior captain Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) and fellow junior Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) won both their matches Saturday, with Arjoon clinching the win over the Diplomats (1-12) in thrilling fashion.

Arjoon held off Franklin & Marshall's Lauren Johnston rally to prevail 3-2 (11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 9-11, 11-5) at the No. 2 position. She followed that up with another exciting win at No. 2 against the Bears (4-4), rallying for a 3-2 (13-11, 3-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-7) victory over Alexa Jacobs.

Bull won 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-2) at the No. 9 position over the Diplomats' Katherine Anderson and emerged with a 3-1 (11-6, 6-11, 11-5, 12-10) victory in the afternoon over the Bears' Sophie Book. 

First-years Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) and Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both won Saturday morning against the Diplomats. O'Brien beat Katherine Galambos 3-1 (11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 12-10) at the No. 5 position and Manternach swept Melissa Epstein 3-0 (11-1, 11-6, 11-5) at the No. 6 position. 

Junior Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) also won her match against the Diplomats, sweeping Andreina Benedith 3-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-1) at the No. 3 position.

Against the Bears, in addition to Arjoon and Bull's victories, sophomore Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) won 3-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-5) at the No. 1 position over Quincy Beck. Meanwhile sophomore captain Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) bounced back from her first loss of the season Saturday morning to win 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 13-11) over Brown's Catherine Kimmel at the No. 4 position. 

Bates (6-6) nearly pulled off the upset over the Bears, with Alexova falling in five games 3-2 (7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9) to Hannah Seckendorf at the No. 3 position and two of the Bobcats' other five losses going four games.

The Bobcats welcome Mount Holyoke to town Sunday for a match that gets underway at 12:00 p.m.
