No. 19 women's squash takes fifth at NESCAC Championships with 6-3 win over No. 17 Tufts

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team went undefeated at the top six spots in the lineup on its way to a 6-3 victory over No. 17 Tufts University in the NESCAC tournament fifth-place match Sunday morning at Hamilton College. 

The Bobcats (10-7) beat the Jumbos (12-6) for the second time this season. Bates finishes fifth at the NESCAC tournament for the second time in the last three years. The Bobcats entered this year's tournament as the sixth seed. 

Sophomore captain Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) continued her remarkable season with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 15-13) win over Hannah Burns at the No. 4 position. The victory improves Dunham's personal record to 12-1 on the year. 

Fellow sophomore Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) won 3-0 (11-8, 11-2, 11-7) at the No. 1 position over Julie Yeung to improve her record to 12-5 while playing at the top of the ladder for the second straight year.  

Junior captain Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) moved to 13-3 on the season with a 3-1 (11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9) win over the Jumbos' Claire Davidson. Fellow junior Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) defeated Zarena Jafry 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-8) to boost her record to 10-3 this season. 

The Bobcats' talented first-year pair of Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) and Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) prevailed at the No. 5 and 6 positions respectively. O'Brien swept Catherine Shanahan 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-7), improving her record in her rookie year to 13-4.

Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is 13-4 as well after her 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-5) win over the Jumbos' Rachel Windreich.

The Bobcats will compete at the College Squash Association team nationals at Harvard University Friday, Feb. 16 through Sunday Feb. 18.
