No. 19 women's squash rolls past Bowdoin 9-0 in first round of NESCAC Championships

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team made quick work of rival Bowdoin in the first round of the NESCAC Championships Friday night at Trinity College, defeating the Polar Bears 9-0. 

The sixth seeded Bobcats (9-6) swept every match against 11th seeded Bowdoin (0-12) on Friday. It's the Bobcats' sixth straight win over the Polar Bears and it improves Bates' record to 6-0 all-time against Bowdoin in the NESCAC Championships. 

The Bobcats have won four straight matches and six of their last seven. Sophomore Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) won her 16th straight match dating back to last season, winning 3-0 (11-1, 11-4, 11-5) over Lucy Noel at the No. 5 position. Junior Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) improved her personal record to 12-2 this season with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-8, 11-5) win at the No. 1 position over Clio Bersani.

Bates' senior captains Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) and Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) won at the No. 2 and 3 positions respectively, with Alexova defeating Natasha Belsky 3-0 (11-5, 11-0, 11-7) and Arjoon rolling to a 3-0 (11-1, 11-3, 11-3) victory over Melissa Horan. Sophomore Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) turned in a dominating performance as well, winning 3-0 (11-0, 11-2, 11-1) at the No. 4 position against Hannah Reiff. 

Bates showed off its depth at the No. 6-9 positions, with first-year Natasha Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) winning 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-2) over Jean Davis at the No. 6 position. And seniors Molly Brooks (Charlottesville, Va.) and Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) taking care of business at the No. 7 and 8 positions respectively. Brooks won 3-0 (11-1, 11-0, 11-2) over Emily Coffin and Bull took down Catherine Adams 3-0 (11-1, 11-1, 11-1). 

At the No. 9 position, sophomore Tiffany Cervantes (New Haven, Conn.) earned her first win of the year with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-7) win over Noa Schumann.     

The Bobcats advance to the NESCAC quarterfinals for the 13th straight year and will face No. 3 Middlebury at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.
