No. 18 women's squash opens season with 7-2 win at No. 28 Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The No. 18 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team defeated No. 28 Bowdoin for the seventh straight time, earning a 7-2 victory Friday to open the 2019-20 season.

The Bobcats (1-0) earned a pair of wins at the top of the ladder, with senior captain Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) tallying a 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-5) victory over Bowdoin's Caroline Glaser at the No. 1 position. Junior Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) responded to the challenge of playing higher on the ladder than ever before with a 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-6) win over Clio Bersani at the No. 2 position.

Further down the lineup, rookies impressed for the Bobcats. Four first-years earned wins on Friday, starting at the No. 5 position where Erika Parker (San Salvador, El Salvador) defeated Melissa Horan 3-0 (12-10, 11-6, 11-2). Fellow rookie Victoria Haghighi (Bronx, N.Y.) made quick work of Callie Burkhart by a count of 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-3) at the No. 6 position.

First-years Cordelia Dotson (Houston, Texas) and Lucy Moseley (Philadelphia, Pa.) turned in even more dominating performances, with Dotson winning 3-0 (11-2, 11-0, 11-1) at the No. 7 position and Moseley cruising to a 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-2) victory at the No. 9 position.

Sophomore Natalie Bachman (New Canaan, Conn.) picked up where she left off last year with a 3-0 (11-1, 11-3, 11-2) win over Tessa Frank at the No. 8 position.

Bates returns to action Saturday when the Bobcats host Vassar at 3pm.
