MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Bates women's tennis team challenged host Wesleyan in doubles but ended up falling short in a 9-0 loss Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 8 nationally ranked Cardinals' No. 1 doubles team of Eudice Chong and Aashli Budhiraja defeated the Bates combination of junior Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) and first-year Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) 8-3. At No. 3 doubles, Bates seniors Emma Blakeley (Hope, Maine) and Emma Mattson (Dana Point, Calif.) gave the Wesleyan combination of Nicole McCann and Maddie James a stiff challenge before falling 8-5.

Wesleyan won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Bates experienced some bad luck at No. 1 singles where sophomore Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) had to retire in the second set.

At No. 6 singles first-year Hannah Londoner (Westport, Conn.) impressed again, taking her opponent, Ella Lindholm-Uzzi, to three sets before falling just short (6-3, 3-6, 8-10).

The Bobcats are back in action Thursday when they visit Babson.
