Women's tennis downs Mount Holyoke 9-0 for first home win

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team scored its first home win of the season on Saturday, defeating NEWMAC semifinalist Mount Holyoke College 9-0 in a non-conference match in Merrill Gymnasium.

Bates (2-3) swept doubles play with two-game victories at both second and third doubles, then swept all six singles matches in two sets apiece.

The visiting Lyons (8-5) next travel to Puerto Rico and will take on the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez on March 15.

Bates junior Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) and senior Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) teamed up for the first time in doubles as the Bobcats' top team, and they won 9-7 over Mount Holyoke's Ayame Yazawa and Ching-Ching Huang. At No. 3 doubles, senior Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) and sophomore Hannah Londoner (Westport, Conn.) won 8-6 over Amy Chen and Clara Wang. Meanwhile Bates first-years Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) and Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) had no trouble winning at No. 2 doubles by an 8-1 score over Alexa Colas and Catherine Peabody.

Silverman defeated Yazawa 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Rovinski downed Huang 6-1, 6-0 at second singles.

Playing at No. 3 singles, Rosenthal coasted past Ishita Tibrewal 6-2, 6-1, and Voccola won her second singles match in as many days, defeating Peabody 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4.

Hernandez and Londoner both won by 6-2, 6-1 scores at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Bates will open NESCAC play next Saturday at Middlebury, beginning at 1pm.
