Sweeney wins first-round singles match at ITA Regionals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Bates first-year student Hannah Sweeney registered a first-round victory Friday at the ITA Division III Regional Championships, highlighting the tournament for the Bobcats women's tennis team.

Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.), one of two Bates players in the 64-player singles field, defeated Amherst's Camilla Trapness 6-4, 7-5, advancing to the round of 32. Sweeney then fell to seeded player Catherine Blayze of Middlebury 6-1, 6-3.

Also competing in the singles bracket was senior captain Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine), who earned a seed but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Rachel Cross of Williams in the first round.

Bates' entry in the doubles tournament at ITA Regionals was sophomore duo Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) and Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.). The pair faced third-seeded Hughes and Schossberger of Middlebury, who advanced by an 8-1 score.

The Bobcats will finish up their abbreviated fall season at the Bowdoin Invitational Oct. 13-14.
