Women's tennis defeats Merrimack College 5-2 at home

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team played its only dual match of the fall season in impressive fashion Friday against Division II Merrimack College, downing the Warriors 5-2 at the Wallach Tennis Center.

Bates (1-0) won two out of three doubles matches from Merrimack (7-4), taking the 1-0 lead going into singles, per Division II scoring rules. Bates junior Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) and first-year Sydney Byrnes (Aix-en-Provence, France) defeated Mia Briggs and Rosemary Campanella 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, but Merrimack's Hope Salts and Lauren Persson topped sophomore Haley Washington (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and senior Hannah Londoner (Westport, Conn.) 8-4.

Clinching the doubles point for Bates were sophomore Hannah Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.) and first-year Anna Rozin (Toronto, Ontario), who edged Kristina Calistro and Cassie Restrepo 8-7 (8) at No. 1.

Sweeney and Rozin both controlled their matchups at first and second singles, respectively. Sweeney downed Persson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, and Rozin defeated Restrepo 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. At No. 6 singles, Londoner rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Roberta Marcos. And at fourth singles, Byrnes prevailed in a tiebreaker over Salts, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

Bates is out of action until the spring season. Merrimack will host Le Moyne Sunday at 10am.
