LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 37 nationally ranked Bates women's tennis team swept singles play in an 8-1 victory over Mount Holyoke Saturday in Merrill Gymnasium.

The visiting Lyons (4-3) got a point at No. 1 doubles, where Ching-Ching Huang and Anissa Aamoum teamed up to edge Bates juniors Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) and Suzanne Elfman (Longmeadow, Mass.) 8-6. But the Bobcats (2-2) still grabbed the lead heading into singles play, as first-year Anna Rozin (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Hannah Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.) defeated Catherine Peabody and Anya Gerasimova 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while junior Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) and first-year Sydney Byrnes (Aix-en-Provence, France) won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Bates swept all 12 sets in singles play and gave up only 12 games in all. Sweeney's 6-0, 6-3 victory over Huang at No. 1 singles earned the Bobcats their decisive fifth point of the afternoon. Also sweeping their singles matches for Bates were senior captain Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) at No. 2, Rozin and No. 3, Elfman at No. 4, Rovinski at No. 5 and Byrnes at No. 6.
