No. 30 women's tennis wins 8-1 at Wheaton (Mass.)

NORTON, Mass. -- The No. 30 nationally ranked Bates women's tennis team rolled to an 8-1 victory at Wheaton College on Sunday, in their final non-conference match of the season.

Bates (5-6) took a 3-0 lead in doubles play, including an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles by juniors Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) and Suzanne Elfman (Longmeadow, Mass.) over Harley Swainston and Connor O'Keefe.

Senior captain Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) and first-year Anna Rozin (Toronto, Ontario) teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Ines de Bracamonte and Miriam Galindo Cerrada 8-2, and sophomore Hannah Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Lauren Hernandez (Dayton, N.J.) bat Allison Burton and Isabelle Garvanne 8-3 at second doubles.

The host Lyons (5-8) won their lone point at No. 1 singles, where de Bracamonte defeated Sweeney 6-2, 6-4. But Bates won in straight sets in four of the six singles matches, while Elfman came back from a set down at No. 3 singles to win her second set over Galindo Cerrada in a tiebreaker, going on to win the subsequent super tiebreaker 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-2.

Rozin won 6-2, 6-2 over Garvanne at No. 2 singles, Rovinski defeated O'Keefe 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, Hernandez defeated Burton 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, and first-year Sydney Byrnes (Aix-en-Provence, France) won for the third straight time at No. 6 singles, defeating Swainston 6-4, 6-3.

Bates (5-6) next plays at Amherst on Wednesday at 4pm.
