No. 30 women's tennis stopped at No. 7 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. -- No. 7 nationally ranked Amherst defeated the No. 30 Bates women's tennis team 9-0 on Wednesday, in the Bobcats' first road NESCAC loss.

Bates (5-7, 1-2 NESCAC) was competitive with the host Mammoths (9-2, 3-1 NESCAC) in doubles, but Amherst prevailed in all three contests. Juniors Suzanne Elfman (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) lost 8-6 to Maddie Dewire and Maggie Owensby at No. 3 doubles, while sophomore Hannah Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Lauren Hernandez (Dayton, N.J.) were defeated by an 8-5 score at second doubles by Camille Smukler and Anya Ivenitsky.

Sweeney and Rovinski both won five games, as Bates fell in straight sets in all six. Sweeney lost 6-3, 6-2 to Jackie Bukzin at first singles while Rovinski lost 6-1, 6-4 to Owensby at the No. 5 spot.

Bates stays on the road to play at NESCAC rival Trinity Thursday at 4pm.
