Women's tennis sweeps singles play in 8-1 win over Colby at Wallach

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 30 nationally ranked Bates women's tennis team won two out of three doubles matches before sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets in an 8-1 victory over Colby Monday at the Wallach Tennis Center.

Playing in her final home match, senior captain Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) raised Bates' lead after doubles to 3-1, when she wrapped up a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Gabriela Venditti.

Junior Suzanne Elfman (Longmeadow, Mass.) extended the lead to 4-1 when she finished off Callie Nesbitt by a 7-5, 7-5 score at No. 4 singles. First-year Anna Rozin (Toronto, Ontario) then made it 5-1 and clinched the victory with her 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Lydia Venditti at third singles.

Sophomore Hannah Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.) followed with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles over Levitz. First-year Sydney Byrnes (Aix-en-Provence, France) captured her fourth straight singles victory, defeating Lindsey Hernandez 6-3, 6-3 at sixth singles. And junior Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) capped the evening with a 6-4, 7-6(3) defeat of Katharine Dougherty at fifth singles.

Colby (7-7, 1-5 NESCAC) took its point at No. 2 doubles, where Carly Levitz and Gabriela Venditti topped Sweeney and junior Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) 8-4. Stone and Rozin won 8-2 at first doubles for Bates, and Elfman and Rovinski teamed up to win 8-6 at third doubles.

Bates (7-8, 3-3 NESCAC) next plays at Bowdoin Thursday at 4pm, then at Williams in its regular-season finale Sunday at 10am.
