Sweeney wins No. 1 singles match at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bates sophomore Hannah Sweeney scored a 6-3, 0-6, 10-3 victory at No. 1 singles over Julia Marks to highlight the No. 30 Bobcats' 8-1 loss at No. 7 Bowdoin Thursday.

The Polar Bears (12-4) swept the three doubles matches and won five out of six singles matches, all in straight sets.

Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.), currently the 20th-ranked singles player in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, topped a slightly higher-ranked opponent in Marks, ranked 17th. She rose to 8-8 as Bates' No. 1 singles player this season.

Bates (7-9) wraps up the regular season at Williams College Sunday at 10am.
