MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Bates seniors Isabelle Rovinski and Lauren Hernandez teamed up for a first-round doubles victory to highlight the Bobcat women's tennis team's venture to the ITA New England Regional Championships, held this weekend at Middlebury College.
Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) and Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) defeated Mount Holyoke's Catherine Peabody and Annissa Aamoum 8-3 to advance to the round of 16, where they were eliminated in a tiebreaker 8-7(0) by Amherst's Jackie Bukzin and Maddie Dewire.
They were one of two Bates entries in the doubles tournament. Sophomore Anna Rozin (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Haley Washington (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) also played, falling 8-2 to the fourth-seeded team in the field of 32 pairs, Venia Yeung and Caitlyn Ferrante of Wesleyan.
Bates had three entries in the ITA singles tournament, with all three falling in the first round of 64 players. Rozin lost to Colby's Callie Nesbitt 7-6(4), 6-4; Hernandez fell 6-0, 6-1 to third-seeded Jackie Bukzin of Amherst, and senior Suzanne Elfman (Longmeadow, Mass.) fell 6-0, 6-2 to fourth-seeded Camille Smukler of Amherst.
Bates' abbreviated fall season will continue Oct. 11-12 at the Bowdoin Invitational.
