Women's tennis downs Division II Franklin Pierce 8-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team routed Division II team Franklin Pierce University 8-1 Sunday at the Wallach Tennis Center, in the Bobcats' lone head-to-head match of the abbreviated fall season.

Bates (1-0) swept the three doubles matches from Franklin Pierce (8-5) by a combined 24-3 score to set the tone. Seniors Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) and Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) defeated Liria Loria and Brigid Washburn 8-1 at first doubles, while senior Suzanne Elfman (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Anna Rozin (Toronto, Ontario) defeated Jazmin Flood and Laura Alvarez Tello 8-2 at second doubles, and junior Haley Washington (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and sophomore Sydney Byrnes (Aix-en-Provence, France) shut out Jillian Pagliuca and Ashley Flood 8-0 at No. 3.

Alvarez Tello scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Rovinski at second singles, but the Bobcats won convincingly at the other five spots. Rozin defeated Loria 6-2, 6-3 at first singles, Hernandez won 6-2, 6-2 at third singles, Washington defeated Pagliuca 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles, first-year Joanna Atwater (Short Hills, N.J.) defeated Jazmin Flood 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles, and Elfman shut out Washburn 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
