BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bates scored four team points by placing fifth in the distance medley relay, while two pole vaulters recorded impressive personal bests on the first day of the New England Division III Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday at Bowdoin.

In the distance medley relay, sophomore Vanessa Paolella (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.), junior Talia Binns (Interlaken, N.J.), sophomore So Kim (Thornhill, Ontario) and senior Sarah Rothmann (Andover, Mass.) took fifth place with a time of 12:19.26, making them the ninth-fastest DMR team in program history.

In the pole vault, junior Ashley Pratt (Greene, Maine) and first-year Lauren Berube (Auburn, Maine) both cleared the bar at 10 feet, 8.25 inches. It wasn't enough to score any team points, with Pratt placing 10th and Berube tying for 12th place, but both women moved into a two-way tie for fourth place on Bates' all-time performance list. First-year Lily Simmons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va.) placed 20th (10-2.5).

In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Abby Hamilton (Yarmouth, Maine) placed 11th out of 26 in 18:14.31, while senior Hannah Austin (North Yarmouth, Maine) placed 14th (18:21.68).

Bates placed 15th in the 4x200 relay, with senior Sarah Shoulta (Waterville, Maine), first-year Rebecca Willis (West Newbury, Mass.), first-year Emily-Claire Duffy (Belmont, Mass.) and junior Megan Seymour (West Hartford, Conn.) finishing in 1:50.77.

The bulk of the meet takes place Saturday, starting at 10am.
