NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Bates track and field senior Katie Barker became the third-fastest 5,000-meter runner in team history on Friday, highlighting the first day of the all-divisions Open New England Championships at Southern Connecticut State University.
Barker (Burlington, Vt.) finished eighth out of 31 runners in the 5K, fourth among Division III athletes, with a time of 17:23.94, slicing over 20 seconds off of her previous best time of 17:44.66. Barker moved from ninth place on Bates' all-time performance list in the 5K to third place, trailing only Katherine Cook '18 (16:34.68) and Jessica Wilson '17 (16:57.09). Her time would rank 25th in the country heading into the weekend. She scored one point and earned All-New England honors with the performance.
Also competing Friday for the Bobcats:
- Senior Hannah Austin (North Yarmouth, Maine) placed 12th among 27 athletes in the 10,000 meters, with a time of 39:05.98.
- First-year Rebecca Willis (West Newbury, Mass.) placed 19th in the 400-meter hurdles, in 1:06.26.
- Senior Sarah Shoulta (Waterville, Maine) placed 28th in the 100-meter hurdles, in 16.17 seconds.
- Junior Megan Seymour (West Hartford, Conn.) placed 30th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.07).
The meet continues Saturday with senior Ayden Eickhoff (Corvallis, Mont.) competing in the 1,500 meters, first-year Elise Lambert (Amherst, N.H.) in the 800 meters, and first-year Mary Corcoran (Brookline, Mass.), senior Sarah Rothmann (Andover, Mass.), sophomore So Kim (Thornhill, Ontario) and either Eickhoff or Lambert running the 4x800 relay.
