BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates volleyball team gave NESCAC rival Bowdoin all they could handle in a 3-1 defeat and the Bobcats fell 3-0 to Johnson & Wales Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (3-5, 0-2 NESCAC) visit Colby this Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Bowdoin 3, Bates 1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19)

First-year Ruby Lightbourn (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied a team-high 13 kills in Bates volleyball's 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19) loss to Bowdoin on Saturday. Senior Jacqueline Forney (Bloomington, Ind.) added a team-high 28 assists and 18 digs. Sophomore Gabi Eustache (New York, N.Y.) recorded a match-high 32 digs.

Caroline Flaharty led the Polar Bears with 16 kills and Kate Kiser dished out a match-high 41 assists.

In the first set, the Bobcats held a 4-2 lead before Bowdoin went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. The Bobcats pulled to within one at 8-7 after a Bowdoin attack error but that was as close as they got as Bowdoin jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the 25-18 victory.

Bates turned the tables in the second set.

Trailing 21-20, the Bobcats called timeout and came back strong with sophomore Taylor Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.) tallying a kill on an assist from Forney, tying things up at 21. The teams traded points until back-to-back Bowdoin attack errors gave Bates the set by a count of 25-23.

The Polar Bears led from the beginning in the third set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The Bobcats kept fighting though and a Lightbourn kill cut the deficit to 19-16 later in the set. But the Polar Bears won six of the next seven points to win 25-17, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

Bates got off to a much stronger start in the fourth set, going up 12-9 on another Lightbourn kill. But an 8-0 Bowdoin run gave the Polar Bears the lead for good. Trailing by five, the closest Bates got after that was to within three at 18-15 on a Lauren Brough '19 (Killingworth, Conn.) with an assist from Forney. The Polar Bears clinched the match by winning the fourth set 25-19.

Johnson & Wales 3, Bates 0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-13)
