WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Junior Taylor Stafford-Smith recorded a team-high 10 kills, junior captain Gabi Eustache recorded a match-high 20 digs and junior captain Julia Panepinto dished out a match-high 29 assists but the Williams College Ephs swept their way past the Bates volleyball team 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) Saturday afternoon.
Mia Weinland paced the Ephs (10-7, 4-3 NESCAC) with 13 kills and Erin Denham added 10 of her own. Eustache (New York, N.Y.) and Panepinto both recorded service aces for Bates. Meanwhile, the Ephs' Alex Newton led all player with four service aces.
The Bobcats (7-5, 2-4 NESCAC) struggled to convert kill chances, finishing with a kill percentage of .091 compared to the Ephs' mark of .202.
Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.) put Bates up 9-3 in the first set with a kill but the Ephs 4-0 run to cut the Bates edge to two. Another Stafford-Smith kill on an assist from Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) put Bates up 10-7. Then the Ephs went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-10 lead. Sophomore Ruby Lightbourn (Los Angeles, Calif.) tied things at 11 before Williams went on a 3-0 run to take the lead for good.
The Bobcats stayed within a point at 17-16 after a Stafford-Smith kill. Williams had an answer though, going on a 4-0 run to take command of the set. A Weinland kill clinched it at 25-20.
In set number two, Bates kept it close early, trailing 5-4 after an Ephs attack error. A 6-0 Williams run put the Ephs up by seven and they never led by fewer than four points after that.
The Ephs jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the third set before Bates chipped away at the deficit, closing to within four points at 20-16 after a Stafford-Smith kill. The Ephs had an answer though, scoring the next two points and going on to take the final set by a count of 25-19.
Bates is back in action this Wednesday when the Bobcats host Maine Maritime at 7pm in Alumni Gym.
