BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates volleyball team didn't go down without a fight, but fell in straight sets, 25-20, 25-12, 27-25, in a non-conference match at Bowdoin Tuesday night.
The NESCAC-leading Polar Bears rose to 19-1 this season, while Bates fell to 9-7.
Junior Taylor Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.) led Bates in kills for the fifth time in the past six matches, tallying nine on 33 attempts with one error (.242). She also led Bates in digs with 18.
Sophomores Ruby Lightbourn (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Delaney Mayfield (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tallied seven kills apiece for Bates. Junior Gabi Eustache (New York, N.Y.) and first-year Megan Seabury (Santa Barbara, Calif.) totaled 14 and 13 digs, respectively, while junior Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) added nine digs to her 31 assists on the night.
Caroline Flaharty (11 kills) and Sophia Pahl (nine kills) led the Bowdoin attack.
After a lopsided second set in the host Polar Bears' favor, Bates employed a balanced attack for its best performance of the night, getting four kills apiece from Stafford-Smith, Mayfield and first-year Sydney Phillips (Wrentham, Mass.). Bates took a 24-23 lead on a kill by sophomore Angel Echipue (Munich, Germany), and tied it at 25-25 on a Stafford-Smith kill, but the Polar Bears clinched the win on consecutive attack errors by the Bobcats.
The Bobcats will play three matches this weekend at the Hall of Fame Tournament, beginning Friday at 7pm at Smith College. On Saturday they will play two neutral-site matches at Amherst College, against Coast Guard at 9am and against Bridgewater State at 11am.
