Volleyball splits a pair of matches to wrap up Hall of Fame tournament

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore Sydney Phillips recorded 11 kills for the Bates volleyball team in a 3-1 win over Gordon and 10 kills in a 3-0 loss to Wellesley Saturday to wrap up the Hall of Fame Tournament, which saw Bates win three of four matches over the course of two days. 

The Bobcats (14-7) return home to host the University of Southern Maine Thursday at 7pm. 

Bates 3, Gordon 1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-19)

Phillips (Plainville, Mass.) and junior Angel Echipue (Munich, Germany) recorded 11 kills each to lead the Bobcats past Gordon 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-19) Saturday morning.

Senior captain Gabi Eustache (New York, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 25 digs and junior Ruby Lightbourn (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 20 digs of her own in the win. Lightbourn also recorded a match-high five service aces. First-year Emma Eide (Ramsey, N.J.) added 15 assists and 11 digs and senior captain Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) paced Bates with 18 assists.

Amanda Snyder and Jacque Fitzgerald led Gordon with nine kills each. Ashlyn Gergins dished out a match-high 30 assists and Jenny Curtiss recorded 24 digs.

After falling by two points in the first set, the Bobcats took command in the second set, running out to a 9-1 lead. Junior Olivia McCulloch (Sunderland, Mass.) recorded a service ace to make the score 15-5, forcing Gordon to call its second timeout of the set.

Gordon cut the Bates lead to 15-7 before the Bobcats went on a 3-0 run, keyed by kills from junior Delaney Mayfield (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and senior Taylor Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.). 

Phillips finished off the 25-12 second-set win in style with a kill. 

Bates once again jumped out to a quick start in the third set. McCullough got the set started with a kill and Lightbourn followed with a service ace. 

Up 4-0, the Bobcats saw their lead trimmed to 7-6 before Mayfield and Lightbourn answered with back-to-back kills. 

Bates went ahead 15-10 and another 3-0 run forced Gordon to call time. Bates won the set 25-14.

The Bobcats trailed 13-12 in the fourth set before Lightbourn tallied a kill, Phillips followed with a kill of her own and Panepinto recorded a service ace to put Bates up for good at 15-13. 

A pair of Lightbourn service aces a few points later helped Bates extend its lead to 18-14. The Bobcats went on to take the set and the match.

Wellesley 3, Bates 0 (25-20, 25-13, 30-28)

Lauren Gedney led all players with 17 kills to lead the Wellesley College Blue past the Bates volleyball team 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 30-28) Saturday afternoon.

Phillips led Bates for the second straight match, this time with 10 kills. Lightbourn added seven kills and eight digs. Eide and Panepinto recorded 16 and 15 assists respectively. Stafford-Smith tossed in six kills on 10 attempts for a .500 attack percentage. 

Nikki Jensen chipped in 10 kills and six digs for the Blue (19-3). Sophomore Nicole Doerges added five kills and three service aces. TylerBell Smith put down four kills on six attempts for a .667 attack percentage and six block assists.

Coming from behind, the Bobcats went on a 5-0 run to take the lead at 8-6 in the first set.

Both teams played point-for-point before a kill from Gedney sparked a series of attack errors from Bates to seal the first set at 25-21. The Blue controlled the second set early taking the lead at 11-8 and finishing the set 25-13.

The third set remained neck-and-neck until the end as Stafford-Smith tied it up with a kill at 28-28 before the Blue took it home two points later 30-28. The Blue racked up nine service aces and 40 total kills for the win.
