WATERVILLE, Maine -- The No. 20 nationally ranked Bates women's cross country team achieved its best team finish at the NESCAC Championship meet since 1987, outracing nationally ranked Middlebury and Amherst to place third among 11 teams Saturday at the Quarry Road Recreation Area.
The Bobcats scored 109 points, second only to No. 5 Williams (47) and No. 6 Tufts (72), and ahead of both No. 8 Middlebury (113) and No. 23 Amherst (132). Bates placed fifth at the meet a year ago.
Bates senior Jessica Wilson (Cumberland, Maine) and junior Katherine Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) led the Bobcats in ninth and 14th places overall, respectively, becoming the team's first All-NESCAC (top 14) duo since 1996 (Adelia Myrick and Abby Phelps).
Wilson finished the 6-kilometer course in 23:11.4, 1.1 seconds behind eighth-place Ashley Curran of Connecticut College. Middlebury's Abigail Nadler was the runaway individual champion (22:33.8). Cook finished in 23:26.4. Sophomore Katie Barker (Burlington, Vt.) was close behind in 16th (23:32.1) among 129 individuals, and was the second-fastest No. 3 runner for any team.
Senior captain Molly Chisholm (Wayland, Mass.) placed fourth on the team and 34th overall in 24:03.8 and first-year Olivia LaMarche (Lynnfield, Mass.) completed Bates' scoring in 39th place (24:08.2). Junior Mary Szatkowski (Buxton, Maine) and sophomore Sarah Rothmann (Andover, Mass.) were Bates' displacers in 60th (24:45.6) and 61st (24:46.0) respectively.
Bates next competes at NCAA Regionals, taking place in Westfield, Mass., on Nov. 12. The Bobcats will hope their performance there can propel them to their first team bid to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 19 since 2012.
