No. 21 women's cross country outraces Colby in season-opening meet

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The No. 21 nationally ranked Bates women's cross country team won both the junior/senior and first-year/sophomore races in convincing fashion, to defeat rival Colby in both of the season-opening Bates-Colby Class Wave Races Saturday at Colby.

Under the annual meet's modified scoring system, both teams' seniors and juniors combined to race against one another, and first-years and sophomoresin the other, with the top five finishers scoring points and the higher score winning.

Senior Katie Barker (Burlington, Vt.) led Bates to a 32-23 victory in the senior/junior race, finishing second by a two-second margin to Colby's Helen Chavey, covering the 3.92-kilometer course in 14:36. Junior Olivia LaMarche (Lynnfield, Mass.) was third in the race in 14:50 to score eight team points. Seniors Sarah Rothmann (Andover, Mass.), Wendy Memishian (Medway, Mass.) and Hannah Austin (North Yarmouth, Maine) were fifth (15:16), sixth (15:22) and seventh (15:27) in the race, combining for 12 more team points.

Sophomore Abby Hamilton (Yarmouth, Maine) won the first-year/sophomore race by 20 seconds ahead of runner-up and first-year teammate Tara Ellard (Brewster, Mass.), with a time of 14:53. Following Ellard (15:13) for Bates were sophomore Vanessa Paolella (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) in third place (15:15) and first-year Loren Andrews (Wellesley, Mass.) in fourth (15:25) to sweep the first four places. First-year Elise Lambert (Amherst, N.H.) placed seventh in 15:39 to score four additional points for the Bobcats.

Bates will host Tufts in a dual meet next Saturday at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. The women's race begins at 11am, followed by the men's race against Tufts and Southern Maine at 11:45.
