NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- Olivia LaMarche won the sophomore/senior race and first-year Jillian Richardson took second place in the first-year/junior race, leading the Bates women's cross country team to victory in the annual Bates/Colby Class Wave races Saturday at Pineland Farms.
The top five finishers for each team earn team points, with the higher score winning. Bates outscored Colby 32-23 in the sophomore/senior race and 33-22 in the first-year/junior race, for a combined count of 65-45. Bates placed five runners among the top seven individuals in both races.
LaMarche (Lynnfield, Mass.) covered the 2.84-mile course in 17:19, outpacing runner-up Rebecca Berube of Colby by 29 seconds for first place in the sophomore/senior race. Sophomore Elise Lambert (Amherst, N.H.) finished second for Bates and fourth overall in 17:59, followed in succession by sophomore Emily Carty (Sweden, Maine) in fifth place (18:05), sophomore Tara Ellard (Brewster, Mass.) in sixth (18:11) and sophomore Carly Harris (Orinda, Calif.) in seventh (18:12).
Colby junior Sophia Gorman ran the day's fastest time to finish first in the first-year/junior race in 16:55. But Richardson (Auburn, Maine) was an impressive second in 17:06, followed by junior Abby Hamilton (Yarmouth, Maine) in third (17:27) and first-year Jordan Wilson (Medfield, Mass.) in fourth (17:32). Rounding out Bates' scoring were first-year Rowan Hassman (Coppell, Texas) in sixth (17:45) and junior Vanessa Paolella (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) in seventh (17:51).
Bates returns to Pineland next Saturday to host the Bates Invitational at 12pm, racing against Tufts, Connecticut College, and Middlebury.
